Fun Food Fact: Jimmies and sprinkles actually are the same thing. In Pennsylvania (especially the Philadelphia area), Boston, and many cities of New England, the little colorful candies that top chocolate covered pretzels, cupcakes, and ice cream are called jimmies. In New York and other cities across the U.S., this tiny candy topping is called a sprinkle.

After seeing the comments about the chocolate getting cold, I left the bowl in the hot water while I dipped the pretzels. Many creative stories have been shared to explain how pretzels and chocolate came together. One tale tells of a German baker joining forces with his chocolatier neighbor in the 1500s to dip pretzels. However, this idea is purely imagination. Dipping into the history of pretzels and chocolate, the story might become a little clearer.

Historians document the story of chocolate quite well. However, anyone dipping pretzels into chocolate back in the 1500s would have had a soggy mess. Why? Because only drinking chocolate existed in those days. Nearly 300 years later, Casparus van Houten Sr. developed a process to separate the cocoa solids from the butter. Then, in 1828, his creation brought on a candy revolution which led to the development of the most amazing, versatile ingredient we have today: chocolate!

The first commercial hard pretzels, the kind that makes the combination with chocolate so irresistible, came along in 1861. Julius Sturgis opened a bakery in a house built around 1784 in Lititz, Pennsylvania. He used a recipe given to him by an unnamed friend. How long people had been making hard pretzels before then is unknown.

The pretzels were good, however, they were all broken and crumbled. There was not enough cushion in the box to stop them from getting all broken. I would prefer a selection that was all milk chocolate, all white chocolate, or milk/white.

When I first heard about chocolate-covered pretzels, I was utterly confused. What is this nonsense about dipping salty food into chocolate? Little did I know that salt on chocolate would be a thing years later. Little did I know that I would learn to LOVE chocolate-covered pretzels!

The turning point was when I bought one of those 100-calorie snack packs with the chocolate-covered pretzels. One bite was all it took for me to understand that salt and chocolate really do go together.

The thing about store-bought chocolate-covered pretzels is that they tend to get too sweet. You may disagree, but dipping these pretzels in semi-sweet chocolate (and not milk chocolate) is the way to go.

I wanted the pretzels to be thinly coated with chocolate, so I melted chocolate chips with a bit of coconut oil. The melted chocolate will be thinner and stay all nice and melty for longer this way. BUT, it also means that you should store the pretzels in the refrigerator so that the chocolate does not melt over again. 041b061a72
